The Truth of the Gospels

I received the question today, ‘How do we know the Bible isn’t a story like Beowulf?’ The question came from a primary school child who had been learning about Beowulf that morning. It’s a good question though isn’t it? We were talking about the Gospels at the time and so we’ll limit our answer to the truth of the Gospels here as well. There are two points that are worth considering. First, sources. The opinion of most people who study the Gospels is that Mark was written first (60s AD), followed by......

She Never Gave up Praying

‘Behind every great man lies a great woman’. A lady called Monica had a son. Being a Christian she began to pray for him from birth. Like many young people the boy grew up amid temptations in the world around and was charmed by them. She never gave up praying. She wept, she begged, she prayed. She longed for the Lord to bring her son to himself. It seemed as though he just got farther away. He rejected Christ and joined another religion. She never gave up praying. He was finally brought......

Reflections from a Holiday Club first timer

I’d heard about All Saints’ Holiday Club. All good things you understand. Upon arriving in Eastbourne it was a good way for our children to immerse themselves in Eastbourne life, as well as a good way to get to know newly met classmates who happened to be well represented. Little did I expect that four Holiday Clubs later I would be thrown into the thick of this week of madness, having to don the chainmail of the Black Knight by day and having paint thrown at me by night! It has been......

All Saints had a wonderful four days while the flower festival lasted. There was much fun and laughter and a great deal of cake. We welcomed over 650 visitors and met some delightful and interesting people. We even met a couple from New York, although they didn’t fly over especially for our event. We raised sufficient funds to recoup our costs, and divide £300 equally between our flower fund, our organ restoration fund and the Winter Night Shelter appeal. A huge ‘thank you’ is due to all who contributed in so many ways......

Distinctive in serving others

Bible by the Beach has finished for another year. Many have been richly blessed by the teaching, the worship, fellowship, meeting up with old friends – the simple joy of being with God’s people and realising that we are not alone, that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves, than All Saints and Eastbourne: we are part of God’s ultimate purposes to conform us to Christ, to bring us to maturity in him so we are fit for the restoration of all things in the New Creation, presented to the......

Our very own Diocesan Mother's Union President!

Below is a report from Mrs. Kathryn Anderson, All Saints church member and new Diocesan member of the mothers union. I am privileged to be the new Diocesan President in Chichester Diocese for Mothers’ Union, especially in this special 140th year and the year of our Queen’s 90th birthday. I would like to tell you about my journey here. I became a member of Mothers’ Union in July 1996 in the Guildford Diocese. We lived in Dorking and as a young working Mum I enjoyed the occasional evening meeting when we discussed......

He is risen! Alleluia!

One of the great things about the Anglican Church is that it calls for six weeks of Easter celebrations. And why not! The resurrection of Jesus is the ground-breaking, life-changing news at the heart of the Christian message. We enjoyed a wonderful Easter weekend at All Saints celebrating and thinking more about the death and resurrection of Jesus – a passover Supper, three hours at the cross, a very moving performance of the Messiah and an uplifting Easter Sunday together. Robert has thanked everyone who gave so much of themselves in helping in the......
