Easter Sunday Joy!

Easter Sunday was a joyful end to a wonderful weekend of celebrating all that God has accomplished for us, and for the world, through his Son Jesus Christ; from the Agape meal on Maundy Thursday, to thought provoking and moving moments on Good Friday to the sheer joy and exhilaration shared on Easter Sunday. This season has allowed us to renew our commitment as a church family to centre our life firmly on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. Bishop Richard certainly left us in no doubt that the......

First for Forums

Its been great to get the forums off the ground in the last week. All forums have met and are beginning to evaluate different areas of our church family life and see how God might lead us forward in the future. We are a busy church but blessed with many willing and able volunteers to make everything possible. The forums are about mobilising the maximum number of volunteers for works of service in the church and community. However, they are also about developing a sense of ownership and responsibility for the work......

Bishop Martin's Advent Reflection 1

1st Sunday of Advent Isaiah 2.1-5; Romans 13.11-end; Matthew 24.36-44 Here is an indicator of deprivation that I suspect is rarely noted in school inspections. A primary school teacher asked the pupils in her year 6 class what they would like to be and do when they grow up. There was silence. They had little or no idea because the thought that they had any say over their future was totally alien to them. The teacher persisted, however. What about if they came top in their class and did really well at school, what then would......

YEAR of the BIBLE

Throughout the Diocese, as the Church year begins again, we are being encouraged to engage in the Year of the Bible. At All Saints our first reaction may be – ‘well every year is a year of the Bible’. I hope this is true, but if you’re anything like me, it is easy to take for granted what we hold dear in life; easy to assume the everything important is in place as they always have been. However, we are easily mistaken in life and if nothing else, this year gives us the opportunity......

Going for Growth - FAQs!

Saints’ Together Sunday It was great to enjoy time together on 6th November as a whole church family. Being all in the same place at the same place for a number of hours reminded us of our common aim to grow together in Christ as his church and fulfil his calling on our life together. What we asked of each other The main thrust of the presentation to the church family centred on the need for us to support the work of All Saints’ by ‘each playing our part’. This comes from......

The Truth of the Gospels

I received the question today, ‘How do we know the Bible isn’t a story like Beowulf?’ The question came from a primary school child who had been learning about Beowulf that morning. It’s a good question though isn’t it? We were talking about the Gospels at the time and so we’ll limit our answer to the truth of the Gospels here as well. There are two points that are worth considering. First, sources. The opinion of most people who study the Gospels is that Mark was written first (60s AD), followed by......

She Never Gave up Praying

‘Behind every great man lies a great woman’. A lady called Monica had a son. Being a Christian she began to pray for him from birth. Like many young people the boy grew up amid temptations in the world around and was charmed by them. She never gave up praying. She wept, she begged, she prayed. She longed for the Lord to bring her son to himself. It seemed as though he just got farther away. He rejected Christ and joined another religion. She never gave up praying. He was finally brought......

Reflections from a Holiday Club first timer

I’d heard about All Saints’ Holiday Club. All good things you understand. Upon arriving in Eastbourne it was a good way for our children to immerse themselves in Eastbourne life, as well as a good way to get to know newly met classmates who happened to be well represented. Little did I expect that four Holiday Clubs later I would be thrown into the thick of this week of madness, having to don the chainmail of the Black Knight by day and having paint thrown at me by night! It has been......

Jul 2016

All Saints had a wonderful four days while the flower festival lasted. There was much fun and laughter and a great deal of cake. We welcomed over 650 visitors and met some delightful and interesting people. We even met a couple from New York, although they didn’t fly over especially for our event. We raised sufficient funds to recoup our costs, and divide £300 equally between our flower fund, our organ restoration fund and the Winter Night Shelter appeal. A huge ‘thank you’ is due to all who contributed in so many ways......
